A Young Patient Makes a Remarkable Recovery from a Serious Kidney Disorder at Kailash Hospital, Noida

A young male child was brought to Kailash Hospital, Sector-27, Noida, in a critical condition, suffering from a rare and life-threatening kidney disorder. His case was managed under the expert supervision of Dr. Neha V Pandey, Consultant Pediatric Nephrologist and Dr Ankur Chawla , Consultant PICU services, , who provided timely and intensive medical intervention. With advanced treatment protocols and dedicated care, the child made an extraordinary recovery, overcoming a condition that can often lead to multiple organ complications.

Presentation of Symptoms

The child presented with symptoms such as:

  • Sudden onset reduced urine output
  • Generalized body swelling
  • Paleness due to anemia
  • Fatigue, poor appetite, and vomiting

These symptoms rapidly worsened, raising alarm for acute kidney injury or another underlying serious condition. The child was brought to Kailash Hospital with seizures and arrested heartbeats.

Diagnosis

Following detailed clinical evaluation and investigations, the patient was diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) — a rare but severe condition that predominantly affects children. Laboratory findings revealed acute kidney injury, low platelet count, hemolytic anemia, and signs of toxin-mediated vascular damage — all hallmark features of HUS.

Condition Overview

Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome is a condition characterized by the triad of:

  • Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells)
  • Thrombocytopenia (low platelets)
  • Acute kidney injury (AKI)

In most pediatric cases, HUS is often triggered by certain bacterial infections (especially E. coli producing Shiga toxins). However, this child had aHUS triggered by circulating antibodies against factor H. The disease affects small blood vessels, especially in the kidneys, leading to a sudden drop in kidney function. Without immediate and aggressive treatment, HUS can lead to long-term kidney damage, seizures, or even multi-organ failure.

Treatment Plan

Given the seriousness of the condition, the patient was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and emergency management was initiated by Dr Ankur Chawla and  PICU team. Under the leadership of Dr. Neha V Pandey, a multidisciplinary plan was implemented, which included:

1. Plasma Exchange Therapy

  • To remove harmful toxins and antibodies contributing to blood cell destruction and kidney damage.
  • Several cycles of plasmapheresis were carried out using advanced apheresis equipment.

2. Hemodialysis

  • As the child’s kidneys were not functioning adequately, dialysis was initiated to filter waste and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance.

3. Supportive Treatment

  • Immunosuppressive medicines were used to target the disease process
  • Intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, and medications to stabilize blood pressure and prevent further complications.
  • Strict monitoring of urine output, kidney function tests, and blood counts.

Throughout the hospital stay, the child was under continuous observation, and the medical team ensured round-the-clock care to respond to any complications.

Outcome and Follow-Up

Thanks to timely diagnosis, advanced therapeutic interventions, and the dedicated efforts of the nephrology and critical care teams, the young patient responded exceptionally well to treatment. His kidney function gradually improved, urine output normalized, and the need for dialysis reduced.

By the time of discharge, the child’s platelet count and hemoglobin levels had stabilized, and renal function tests showed significant improvement. He is dialysis free at present. Post-discharge, he continues to be followed up at the Pediatric Nephrology OPD for monitoring of long-term kidney health and recovery progress.

The child’s parents were overwhelmed with gratitude and praised Dr. Neha  V Pandey and the entire team at Kailash Hospital for their life-saving care, compassion, and professionalism throughout the treatment journey.

Conclusion

This case highlights the importance of early recognition and specialized treatment in managing rare pediatric kidney emergencies like Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. The success story stands as a testament to the advanced pediatric nephrology care available at Kailash Hospital, Noida, and the unwavering commitment of its medical team.

If your child is experiencing symptoms like unexplained fatigue, pallor, or reduced urination, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.
